Spoiler Alert for Tracker season 2, episode 8, "The Night Movers"Tracker season 2 is on a hiatus for the network TV holiday break, but Justin Hartley's procedural is preparing for a massive second half of its sophomore outing when it returns in 2025. The hit CBS series aired its midseason finale, Tracker season 2, episode 8, on December 1, making its return highly anticipated. In "The Night Movers," Colter joins forces with a disappearing operation while navigating the complexities of his Gina Picket case, which plagues the self-proclaimed rewardist and ties him to Gina's sister, Camille. While Camille and Colter parted ways for now, Gina's mystery is far from over.
At the end of the Tracker midseason finale, Colter reunited with Keaton, a retired law-enforcement officer he met investigating a missing person case. Colter and Keaton relate to one another due to their commitment to cold cases they feel responsible for solving. Keaton's return meant that Colter finally had an opening to advance his Gina Picket case, but that's not even the most exciting part of Tracker season 2's return in February. The series still needs to solve its most crucial mystery, what happened to Colter's father in Tracker, and some guest Tracker characters will return to advance the plot.
5 Jensen Ackles Returning As Russell Shaw
Colter's Brother Is Coming Back
One of the most exciting elements of Tracker's 2025 prospects is Jensen Ackles returning as Russell Shaw. In the procedural, Ackles plays Colter's older brother, who Colter initially believed was responsible for their father's mysterious death. However, when Ackles debuted as the mysterious older brother in the penultimate episode of Tracker season 1, the brothers worked together on a case that brought them closer and allowed them to turn over a new leaf. Ackles has already guest-starred once in season 2, and a definitive response from showrunner Elwood Reid confirms Ackles will return for another outing in season 2.
Ackles returned in Tracker season 2, episode 2, "Ontological Shock," for the best reason. Fiona Rene's Reenie Green recruited Russell to help find Colter after he went missing on a job, and the team-up didn't disappoint. While Ackles' return is enough to look forward to in and of itself, the actor's return as Russell Shaw will hopefully unlock something that develops Colter's family mystery and what happened to his father.
4 Colter Reuniting With His Sister Dory
Colter Teased His Sister's Return
Dorian Shaw, Colter's younger sister, can help unlock what happened to Colter's father. After we met Dory and Russell Shaw in flashbacks in the Tracker series premiere, Colter's adult sister debuted in Tracker season 1, episode 11, "Beyond Campus Walls." The brother and sister somewhat got along in the outing. Still, Colter and Dory's conversations illustrated their drastically different perspectives on what fractured their family. When Dory returns, her appearance should clear up lingering questions, such as what Ashton Shaw's old file box contained and why she hid it from her brother.
Tracker season 2 heavily teased Colter's sister's return, so we can expect to see her when the show returns in 2025. In Tracker season 2, episode 5, "Preternatural," one of the show's most popular episodes, Colter finds a girl named Emmaline who has quasi-magical powers and reminds him of his sister. At the end of episode 5, Colter calls Dory's phone, signaling the siblings are likely to meet up sometime in season 2.
3 Colter & Keaton Resolving Gina Picket's Case
Colter And Keaton Can Find Gina
In the Tracker season 2 midseason finale, Colter's new ally Keaton returns with an update on Gina Picket's cold case. After Colter and Keaton teamed up in Tracker episode 6, Colter tasked the retired police officer with helping him discover what happened to Gina, and the ex-cop delivered. Keaton calls Colter with an update, and when they meet up, Keaton has a witness chained up, who Keaton has tortured. The witness, Alex Silva, tells Colter new information about Gina's disappearance. He points to someone called Teacher, who probably took Gina somewhere called The Farm.
Now that Colter has a lead on Gina's disappearance and a possible location to scout out, we can expect another Colter and Keaton team-up when Tracker season 2 returns in 2025. Colter and Keaton worked together well in episode 6, and the former law enforcement officer will likely provide Colter with backup as he investigates The Farm. While it's possible Colter will go it alone, it makes sense for Keaton to return and see the job through to the end.
2 Reenie & Velma Developing A Law Firm
Reenie Is Developing Her Business
While Colter continues life on the open road in Tracker season 2, we can expect to watch Reenie Green continue to build her burgeoning criminal law firm. Reenie debuted her fresh start in the season 2 premiere after the lawyer quit her job in the Tracker season 1 finale. Reenie has offered development updates about her law firm throughout season 2, but they've mostly been about her hopes for the firm or updates about its now-completed design process. As the outing continues in 2025, Reenie's business will likely skyrocket on the solid foundation she built.
Another element to look forward to with Reenie's development of her law firm is the potential for it to make Abby McEnany's Velma Bruin more dynamic. Ahead of Tracker season 2, the series announced that Velma's wife, Teddi, would not feature in the second installment due to Robin Weigert's decision to leave the show. Velma has since tagged along with Reenie's development, and hopefully, her story will take off and explain what happened between Velma and Teddi in Tracker.
1 Justin Hartley's This Is Us Co-Star Returning
Jennifer Morrison Needs To Return
After her appearance in the Tracker season 1 finale, Justin Hartley said his This Is Us co-star, Jennifer Morrison, was "definitely coming back" in Tracker season 2 in an interview with Deadline. In the report, Hartley said his former NBC co-star would appear multiple times. Hartley's full comment on Morrison's appearance was as follows:
She’s definitely coming back. We have some pretty cool stuff for her to do next year. She’ll be back several times next year. We have plans to bring back my whole my family…We have a lot of questions to answer with Colter’s mother. Jennifer Morrison does this really wonderful performance. I think we’d be remiss not to bring her back.
Hartley's comment, which weaves his answer about Morrison's appearance into a remark about Colter's mother, emphasizes Lizzy's importance in the underlying Tracker mystery: who killed Colter's father in Tracker? In the season 1 finale, Lizzy Hawking revealed vital information about Ashton Shaw, and season 2 has yet to follow up on it, so we can expect the series to deliver in 2025.
