The hit series 9-1-1: Lone Star is preparing to end its run, but it appears that another 9-1-1 spinoff series will take its place. It's being reported that a new 9-1-1 spinoff is in the works with its planned location revealed.
Per Deadline, a second 9-1-1 spinoff series is in development at ABC from Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear. According to the report, Hawaii has emerged as the likely setting for the planned new show. Previously, it was reported that Las Vegas was becoming a contender for the spinoff, but the focus is now said to be largely on the Aloha State. As of now, however, the project hasn't been officially greenlit, and ABC has not offered an official comment on the news.
Hawaii is an interesting choice, as it served as the setting for another franchise spinoff series that was recently canceled. After three seasons, NCIS: Hawaii was canceled by CBS, and it aired its final episode this past May. It's a new location for the 9-1-1 universe, however. 9-1-1: Lone Star is set in Austin, Texas, while the original 9-1-1 takes place in Los Angeles, California. ABC currently serves as the home for the original 9-1-1 after the series was previously canceled by Fox. It's not expected that Lone Star to similarly continue on ABC, as the reported focus is to instead develop the next spinoff series.
9-1-1: Lone Star ends With Season 5
Lone Star had been on the bubble for a while before it was officially canceled, though the cast and crew were expecting that the end was coming. Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani previously confirmed how the fifth season was written in such a way that it could serve as the last season for the series, given how it was looking unlikely that Season 6 would happen. This allowed for the characters to be given satisfying endings when the finale airs.
"It was uphill, but my feeling was always, I want to end this series in a way that gives you a beautiful sense of a journey and close for these characters — but doesn’t necessarily mean it couldn’t have new life, if by some bounce of the ball, that was able to happen," she told Variety. "But I did want it, just in case, and assuming that it would be our last, I really wanted to give us that last episode to make people feel like, 'OK I got to know these people, and I feel like I’m leaving these people in a better place, where I’ve watched them grow up.'"
9-1-1 is in the midst of its eighth season on ABC. Following first responders in L.A., the series stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Olisver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Ryan Guzman. 9-1-1: Lone Star similarly follows first responders in the Lone Star state, starring Rob LLowe, Ronen Rubinstein, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva, Julian Works, Gina Torres, Brianna Baker, Skyler Yates, and Jackson Pace. Both shows were created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear.
