Game of Thrones was the breakout role that forever changed Harington's career, and he met his future wife Rose Leslie while filming the series. At the same time, Harington has previously spoken about the toll of playing Jon Snow and how it contributed to struggles with mental health and alcoholism.
Beyond simply not wanting to play Jon again after a decade of doing so, the impact of the experience on his mental health adds more context to why Harington is so averse to reprising the character, even for an audiobook.
Despite Harington's comments, a Jon Snow spinoff series with him returning was previously in development. George R.R. Martin announced that the project was in the works in June 2022.
While the Jon Snow spinoff has been shelved, future Game of Thrones sequels were teased by Martin at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, where he said that "a sequel or two" is in development at HBO. Regardless of what the sequels end up being about, it seems unlikely that Harington will return based on his recent comments about playing the character again.
For now, the franchise is focusing on prequel series based on Martin's existing source material, with House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 both releasing in 2026.
In Harington's post-Game of Thrones career, he has played Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Eternals, Sir Henry Muck in HBO's Industry, and the villainous Finn Clarke in Apple TV's The Family Plan 2. He is returning for Industry season 4 and reunited with Game of Thrones co-star Sophie Turner for the upcoming Gothic horror film The Dreadful.
