6 Best Possible Blue Bloods Spinoffs

There are several possible Blue Bloods spinoff ideas as the series comes to an end. CBS canceled the Tom Selleck-led police and family drama despite its enduring popularity, much of which comes from audience affinity for the Reagan family, a multi-generational family of cops living and working in New York City. There are eight episodes left of Blue Bloods before it leaves the airwaves permanently, and there has been widespread speculation about how the series will end and whether the series finale will set up the premise for a spinoff series.

Soon after announcing the series' cancellation, CBS suggested that a Blue Bloods spinoff was being developed. No spinoff has yet been announced, although star Donnie Wahlberg gave a promising Blue Bloods update, suggesting he might star in one in the near future. There are several viable ideas for Blue Bloods spinoffs that would continue the Reagan family's tradition of supporting one another and show the NYPD in a positive and fair light.

Danny and Baez have worked together to solve homicides since Blue Bloods season 4, often getting the biggest storyline of the episode. Thus, it would not be a stretch to spin them off into their own show so that they can continue to work these types of cases. There is chemistry between the two of them that could lead to romance. This would make for an interesting family subplot, as Baez has an infant daughter and Danny has two sons who are young adults.

This spinoff wouldn't take too much time to set up in the Blue Bloods series finale. The episode could set up Danny and Baez's romance by having Baez come to the final Reagan family dinner in Blue Bloods. The pilot episode of the spinoff could take place a few months later, when Baez and Danny are established as romantic partners as well as work partners. This setup would allow for stories involving Danny and Baez's blended family as well as the case of the week, fitting the Blue Bloods brand of police drama centered around a family of cops.

Jamie is one of the best people to succeed Frank as Commissioner when Frank retires. It would be interesting to create a spinoff set in the future when Jamie's kids are older, and Frank has taken over Henry's role as the grandfather sitting at the head of the table. This spinoff would be set ten to fifteen years after the end of Blue Bloods and could feature different actors as Jamie and Eddie to save costs, with Tom Selleck appearing only at family dinner scenes.

This Blue Bloods spinoff might be tricky to set up in the finale, however. Blue Bloods isn't likely to have a time jump ending in which the series shares what happens to the characters in the future, as that type of story is more sentimental than befits the police drama. However, it would be a perfect Blue Bloods ending for Eddie to share pregnancy news in the finale, and the new series could pick up ten years later when Jamie and Eddie have several children and the oldest is a pre-teen.

Sean was in elementary school when Blue Bloods began and is now a young man trying to decide what he wants to become after college. This makes him a natural fit to lead a spinoff series. A series about Sean as a new recruit to the police force would offer similar stories to Blue Bloods

but from a slightly different perspective. If Sean were in the Police Academy or had newly graduated from it, the spinoff would show the point of view of a rookie cop who happened to be a Reagan.

Sean's spinoff would be compelling if it included his cousins Nicky and Joe Hill regularly. The police aspect of such a series would put Joe in a different light, as he now would be the senior cop advising a rookie rather than the thorn in Jamie's side who never follows orders. Including Joe and Nicky would also allow the series to continue Blue Bloods' Reagan family dinner tradition.

Some episodes of season 14 have already alluded to Sean's future. After getting hurt while trying to help Danny catch a mugger on campus, Sean stated he didn't think law enforcement was for him. However, he could change his mind based on incidents that occur during the series finale, making it easy to set up the premise of this new series. Although the series would require a slight time jump, it would not be set nearly as far in the future as Jamie's series, making it easier to get off the ground.

3 Erin And Anthony Fight For Justice In The Legal System

The Cases Would Be Similar To What Erin Already Does, But The Series Would Focus Exclusively On Them

Erin and Anthony could easily be spun off into a legal drama. Some of the best episodes of Blue Bloods involve Erin dealing with drama at the prosecutor's office such as criminal justice reforms that interfere with her doing her job, bosses that make her life more difficult, and cases where she doubts the guilt of the person she's prosecuting. Thus, an Erin-centered spinoff could feature expanded storylines for her that take up the entire hour. This could be a legal procedural similar to The Good Wife in that Erin constantly has to make tough ethical choices.

While Erin's stories are often the least interesting on Blue Bloods, they could be spiced up by adding defense attorneys and judges that Erin doesn't like dealing with. It would be especially compelling for Erin to have to try cases against Jack (Peter Hermann) periodically. If Jack were to become a recurring character, he and Erin could continue exploring possible reconciliation while butting heads in the courtroom. This tension would keep things interesting, especially if there are subplots involving Erin dating or otherwise trying to move on.

This series would be one of the easiest to connect to Blue Bloods, with Jamie and Danny being mentioned while off-screen most of the time and visiting the new series occasionally. It wouldn't be difficult to set this up in the series finale. Since Erin would mostly be doing what she always did, the family dinner banter could involve a case she's working on, which is revealed to be the first case in the new series. The pilot for the spinoff could take place the day after the final episode of Blue Bloods for the sake of continuity.

There is no hard-and-fast rule that a spinoff has to include major characters, and featuring the new Fire Commissioner (Mira Sorvino) in her own show might provide an interesting parallel to Frank's life as commissioner. One Chicago successfully spun off Chicago PD from Chicago Fire, so there is precedent for a series like this succeeding, and it would be an interesting, original take on Blue Bloods' premise, especially given the animosity between the police and fire departments on the series.

The Fire Commissioner is one of two new characters Blue Bloods will introduce in its final episodes. She will appear in two episodes, though not in the series finale. However, either of her guest appearances could serve as a backdoor pilot to the new show. Additionally, the family could joke about their hatred of the fire department at the final family dinner or tease Sean about how he wanted to be a firefighter when he was a little boy. This connection could help set up the pilot for the new series.

Since Sean is looking for a career path, it would be interesting if he became a firefighter and worked with the Fire Commissioner in the new show. This would give it a strong connection to the original series while moving in a different direction by featuring the Fire Commissioner and her family instead of Frank and his. This connection would open the door to occasional crossovers from other characters from Blue Bloods. The Fire Commissioner could also have a family of her own to keep the tradition of family-centered stories alive.

A prequel featuring Frank as a younger man would offer a strong connection to Blue Bloods and introduce characters who had died before the original series' pilot. This series could feature Henry as the Commissioner of Police and Frank as a beat cop who is raising his four children with his wife, Mary. This premise would allow the spinoff to provide the same type of family-centered police stories that have made Blue Bloods so successful.

This prequel series would tell the story of the factors that shaped Frank into the powerhouse he is in Blue Bloods. It also would introduce Blue Bloods' late Joe Reagan, making it even more tragic that he died before the series began, as well as Frank's wife. The series could also include Henry's perspective on policy changes of the time, which would likely be different from how Frank sees things in the original series.

Although the Blue Bloods finale won't focus on flashbacks, it could set up the prequel series by having Henry or Frank discuss the past at the family dinner. Additionally, if the finale includes Henry or Frank receiving an award for their lifetime of service, this would be a natural connection to a prequel series about an earlier part of Frank's career. This spinoff would be more similar to the original series than many other ideas, making it the strongest option.
