Blue Bloods is over, and Donnie Wahlberg is disappointed. He's not alone. Fans everywhere are in the process of grieving their beloved police drama, especially since it went out on a ratings high. A lot of people tuned in to see how the Reagan family would bid farewell to the world. So many, in fact, that a few cast members tried to campaign to get the show renewed.
Tom Selleck has been extremely vocal about his desire to see the show come back, but Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan, told Fox Digital News that he tried everything he could to keep the show going. “Like, we tried to keep the show going," he told the outlet. "We tried to help the show carry on, and we couldn’t. We couldn’t do it. You know, we did everything we could, everything in our power, to have the show carry on."
Donnie Wahlberg admits being "sad" over cancelation
Donnie Wahlberg has been very forthcoming with details of the final episode, and how difficult it was for him and the rest of the cast to say goodbye to their characters. Especially after a decade and a half of being on CBS.
The actor admitted that he felt "sad" that he would not get a chance to act alongside his small screen family again. He also admitted to feeling "sad," given that so many crew members have relied on the show for steady work over the years. "One of the things we haven’t really talked about," he explained. "Is having worked so long with the crew that we had in New York."
The actor is willing to reprise his character
Despite his sadness, Wahlberg is not closing the book on Blue Bloods or Danny Reagan. In a separate interview with Us Weekly, the actor assured fans that he would be willing to come back to the network if given the chance to play Reagan in a Blue Bloods spinoff.
The actor was careful not to let any cats out of the bag (if there, in fact, cats to be let out), and said that he does not know if there are any ironclad plans to launch a spinoff. If CBS decides to, though, he will be on hand to return.
"I love the character and I certainly thought there were a lot more stories that we could tell with him," Wahlberg asserted. "I'm not saying there will be a spinoff, I'm just saying I haven't closed the door on the character." Hopefully he gets a chance to walk through said door.
