Grey’s Anatomy fans may have to a wait little longer to see the result of the ABC medical drama’s cliffhanger shootout in the Season 21 midseason finale.
When does Grey’s Anatomy return in 2025?
Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 is expected to return from its midseason hiatus on March 6, 2025. However, that date could be pushed due to production delays caused by wildfires across Los Angeles County, especially in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on January 8 that more than a dozen TV show productions based in Los Angeles, including Grey’s Anatomy, had halted production as the Eaton Fire destroyed homes and businesses and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate.
Along with Grey’s Anatomy, other shows that stopped production in the wake of the wildfires were Max’s Hacks; NBC’s Happy’s Place and Suits LA; Apple TV+’s Loot; Peacock’s Ted; CBS’ After Midnight, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, The Neighborhood, Poppa’s House and The Price Is Right; and ABC’s Doctor Odyssey and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Additionally, Warner Bros.’ studio lot in Burbank closed as of January 8, meaning that the shows that film there — including ABC’s Abbott Elementary, The CW’s All American and Max’s The Pitt — would also likely be pausing their productions.
The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Film LA, the Los Angeles city and county’s film office, issued an advisory that all permits filming in Altadena, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge and unincorporated Pasadena — near the site of the Eaton Fire — have been withdrawn. The organization also “advise[s] the production community that personnel resources ordinarily available to support film production may not be available during the local State of Emergency.”
Grey’s Anatomy Season 21’s midseason finale, “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” ended on a cliffhanger with two of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s doctors, Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Dr. Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), in grave danger after they’re involved in a hostage situation when they fetch ice at a local convenience store in the middle of a heatwave and are held up at gunpoint by a robber. The episode ended with Lucas trying to disarm the gunman as the firearm goes off in the ensuing struggle. To make matters worse, Jo, who is pregnant with her and her love interest Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln’s twins, suspects that she’s suffering from vaginal bleeding.
“I heard rumors and schmumors that this might happen, so I was bugging the writers, like, ‘Hey, I hear something is going to go down in this way at a convenience store with these people. Is it true?'” Luddington told Shondaland of the cliffhanger. “Everyone was like, ‘You know, it could change. We don’t know.’ So when I got the script on my phone, I scrolled so fast, there was smoke coming off my finger. I was so shocked. There are so many elements of that episode that pack a punch, and I was freaking out. But I was also really excited. It’s always really fun when you’re in the middle of these dramatic moments. And the fact that Jo is pregnant and is in the mix of all of this, I was like, ‘Let’s go.'”
