Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington Teases Jo and Link’s Future After Midseason Cliffhanger: 'Not What I Expected' (Exclusive)

Camilla Luddington is giving a glimpse of what’s in store for Jo and Link when Grey’s Anatomy returns.

The actress, who plays Dr. Jo Wilson on the hit ABC medical drama, tells PEOPLE that while fans might expect for the couple to come together following their string of disagreements at the start of the season, the March 6 episode might not follow that plan.

“I think that people probably imagined that they've been fighting a lot and that they're going to instantly have this reconciliation as soon as she's back in the hospital and he sort of finds out what's happened and it doesn't happen that way,” she teases, referring to the midseason cliffhanger which saw Jo, who is pregnant with twins, involved in a hostage situation alongside Dr. Lucas Adams (Niko Terho).

“I guess what I'm teasing is their relationship in that episode back, the way they communicate with each other and how they navigate that is not what I expected for them to be,” she adds. “So it's kind of interesting to see it play out.”

Before the series went on hiatus, audiences followed along as Jo and Link (Chris Carmack) navigated their unexpected pregnancy — and the additional surprise that they’d conceived twins. As the November 21 episode came to a close, Jo and Lucas were in harm’s way and it was unclear who was in the line of fire following the sound of a gunshot from inside the store where they were being held.

While Luddington couldn’t say much about what’s to come, she did divulge that the events inside the store will impact her pregnancy. And though online theories have emerged that the midseason finale could be a possible opportunity for Jessica Capshaw to return as her character Arizona Robbins — who is a pediatric and fetal surgeon — Luddington would only confirm that she’d of course love to have her friend back on set.

And as far as her own future on the show, Luddington said she hopes to see Jo one day become the chief of Grey Sloan Memorial.

“It could could just be great comedy where she's a hot mess at it, I don't know, but either way, I just want to see what that looks like,” she says of the future, adding that she also hopes the character finds “balance” within all aspects of her life.

“I think finding moments of peace for her and continuing to take care of her mental health,” she adds. “Continuing to invest in her relationship with the kids and with Link, I think that that feels delicious and yummy for me — for her.”

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
