Midori Francis has made her exit from long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy after playing Mika Yasuda for two years.
It was reported in May that the 30-year-old actress would depart the show after a limited appearance in season 21.
And her storyline came to light during the mid-season finale on Thursday night, which was set six months in the future.
The episode followed Mika as she returned to work for the first time since her sister Chloe died in an accident.
After bursting into hysterics when one of her patients began to code, it became clear she wasn't ready to go back to work. She subsequently decided to leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital altogether.

In one scene she confessed to Bailey: 'I need to find a way forward but I can’t do it if everything around me reminds me of her.'
In a conversation with Deadline, the actress reflected on Mika's future and revealed if she'd ever return to the show.
'I think Mika has a lot of healing to do, and she’s going to go home and do that.
'In the back of my mind, because I know how passionate she is about what she does, do I think and do I hope that she will find a way to use this grief as a way to continue pursuing caring for other people? Yes, I do,' she explained.
She went on to say: 'As far as returning to Grey’s, I would be so delighted. These people and this world [have] become part of my trajectory of acting families, and I would be absolutely delighted to return.'
But she added about her grief-stricken character, 'I don’t know if Mika would, I think for Mika it would be triggering.'
Francis used social media to build fans' anticipation ahead of the fall finale, sharing behind-the-scenes content with her 216,000 Instagram followers.
One post showed her smiling with the cast and crew and she wrote over the image, 'Tonight!!!! Mid-season finale!!!'

The Sex Lives of College Girls skirted the question when asked by Deadline why she decided to bow out of her Grey's role.
She answered: 'First of all, not only did I love the show, I watched the show when I was in middle school.
'I can still remember watching it with my friends and my mom and just being like, "Oh my God, this is TV." Obviously they were older than me, and I just thought that the characters were so cool and interesting.'
The star continued, 'So when I joined this new group of interns, it was so surreal and awesome to be a part of that. I had a full-hearted, full-throated, wild, beautiful ride that I am so grateful for.'
Shifting to how her character was written off, she said, 'Creatively, it’s about coming together to find the right story, the right moment for Mika’s exit that could fit into the larger season and arc, and I think that the writers did such a good job. Because when I think about Mika, she’s so ambitious and she’s so competitive, so what would cause her to leave Grey Sloan? And boy, did they set that up well.'
