I’m Looking Forward To Fire Country’s Spinoff, But There’s 1 Aspect Of Morena Baccarin’s Sherriff County That Puzzles Me

As soon as Fire Country cast Morena Baccarin as Sheriff Mickey Fox for the backdoor pilot for Sheriff Country, I was hooked. Then in stepped Mickey, and her storyline brought intrigue and fun. With a clear backstory still to be explored, CBS had an immediate hit with the proposed Fire Country spinoff, and it wasn’t surprising to find out that it was picked up to series.

While I’m still excited to see the spinoff's combination of soap and crime, there is one question that keeps coming up with the way that Mickey has barely been mentioned and has barely seen since the spin-off series pick-up. Now, I need to know just how big Edgewater is supposed to be, because with a town that is supposed to be small, there’s no way that there wouldn’t be crossovers between the two shows on a regular basis.

Morena Baccarin's Sheriff Country Spinoff Explained

Sheriff Mickey Fox Deals With Small-Town Law Enforcement

  • Fire Country Morena Bacarrin as Mickey Fox
  • Fire Country Morena Baccarin looking at Diane Farr
  • Fire Country Billy Burke Diane Farr Morena Baccarin Max Thieriot

We met Mickey Fox in Fire Country season 2, and she quickly made her presence and her connection to Cal Fire Division Chief Sharon Leone (Diane Farr) known. The two are stepsisters, and there was some bad blood between them when Baccarin’s character first stepped into the series. However, over the course of a handful of episodes, they reconnected and accepted each other, while sharing their own failures as mothers and sisters.

Now Mickey is the sheriff of a small town, and she’ll need to handle the criminal problems that arise while living there. Any crime series set in a small town will make it clear that small-town crime does not mean small-scale crime. There is plenty of room for murder and mayhem, all while Mickey deals with her own family drama.

The Fire Country spinoff will also include Mickey’s ex-con father, Wes Fox (W. Earl Brown), which is sure to complicate her job as sheriff. Then there is her own rebellious daughter, Skye, who Mickey revealed was in rehab during Fire Country, but she could be back home in the new series.

Sheriff Country's Setting Makes Me Wonder How Big Edgewater Is

Edgewater’s Size Means Overlap Is Needed

  • Bode talking to Gabriela in Fire Country season 3
  • Diane Farr as Sharon Leone and Leven Rambin as Audrey James have a conversation in Fire Country season 3 episode 6
  • Kevin Alejandro as Manny Perez and Jules Latimer as Eve Edwards in Fire Country season 3, episode 3-1
  • Morena Baccarin runs through the woods in Fire Country

From the beginning of Fire Country season 1, Edgewater has come across as a sleepy town. Everyone knows everybody’s business, and there is no way of hiding secrets for too long. Any sort of crime that happens in Edgewater is gossiped about, which should lead to a great deal of overlap between Fire and Sheriff Country. With so few people living in the town, characters we know from Fire Country are sure to be at incidents and emergencies in Sheriff and vice versa. 9-1-1 has routinely shown this with Athena there when the 118 needs the police, and that's in Los Angeles.

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 did this, by having characters from both shows turn up from time to time, mostly with Bailey coming into the firehouse to see her husband. However, there was an issue with then having to watch both shows to stay on top of all storylines, and it also meant that some actors were pulling double duty.

Another option for the two Country-verse shows would be to mention events that have happened, especially big events. This could be in passing through Leone talking to Vince or Bode, or it could be through Mickey mentioning some sort of big fire to her deputies. With quick mentions, it keeps the two shows consistent and keeps the size of Edgewater believable in Sheriff Country.
