A quote attributed in social media posts to Scarlett Johansson, saying she refused to sign a “big contract” with a company that asked her to boycott Israel, is fabricated, a spokesperson for the American actress said.
Facebook posts, opens new tab also suggested that Johansson said, "I am Jewish and no amount of money in the world will tempt me to go against Israel," in refusing the contract. Comments on the posts read, “Proud of her,” and “Way 2 go Scarlett!”
However, Johansson’s publicist Marcel Pariseau said in an email that the posts are “totally fabricated,” adding that they are “internet fodder.”
The narrative emerged on social media in mid-June 2024, opens new tab but there are no current news reports of Johansson declining to sign a “big contract,” as suggested online.
Some social media posts, opens new tab also refer to the charity Oxfam International as the company Johansson snubbed.
Johansson resigned as ambassador for Oxfam in January 2014 over disagreements about her endorsement of SodaStream, an Israeli firm that operated a factory in the occupied West Bank, according to a Reuters report .
A statement from Johansson to media outlets at the time gave a “fundamental difference of opinion” with Oxfam as her reason for resigning. Oxfam accepted the resignation and said that Johansson's role as ambassador was “incompatible” with her endorsement of SodaStream, according to the Reuters report.
Johansson said in an interview, opens new tab with the Guardian in March 2014 that she stood behind the decision to work with SodaStream.
There is also no evidence that Johansson made the statement attributed to her in the 2024 social media posts.
