Los Angeles, CA – A firefighting plane responding to the Palisades fire in Los Angeles was grounded Thursday after hitting a civilian drone. The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported the collision occurred in restricted airspace, disrupting critical wildfire efforts.
The plane, a Canadian “Super Scooper” known as Quebec 1, scoops ocean water to extinguish flames from the air. The collision caused wing damage, forcing the CL-415 aircraft out of operation. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Perrone stated the plane would undergo repairs and return to service by Monday. He stressed that drone interference jeopardizes the safety of firefighters and the success of emergency operations.
Flying drones in restricted areas during firefighting efforts is a federal offense. Violators could face up to 12 months in prison and fines as high as $75,000. Authorities reminded residents that drones not only endanger aircraft but also delay efforts to control fires.
Fire officials warned the public to avoid flying drones near active wildfire zones under any circumstances. A single drone can halt an entire fleet of firefighting aircraft, endangering lives and property.
The Palisades fire remains a priority for Los Angeles County firefighters. Authorities urged the public to cooperate with all safety measures as efforts continue to contain the blaze.
