NCIS: Origins Season 2 Gets Optimistic Update From Showrunner: “In It For The Long Haul”

NCIS: Origins' season 2 prospects seem positive, according to a new update from one of its showrunners. The prequel series follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991, during his career at the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) operating out of Camp Pendleton, before he became part of the NCIS of today. Despite stiff competition in the crowded scene of crime dramas, NCIS: Origins has been able to find its place, consistently climbing the Top 10 charts on Paramount+ shortly after its episodes air.

In a recent interview with TVLine, David J. North, who runs the show alongside Gina Lucita Monreal, shared an optimistic update when asked about the show's potential renewal for a second season. Although there has not been an official confirmation from CBS or Paramount+, North's comments suggested that the networks are backing the series, sparking hopes for a long-running show. Check out his full comment below:

We’re really proud of what we’re making, and the goal is always, obviously, to get as many eyes on it as possible. I know that we’re doing well on Paramount+; after we air, the following day we’re always in the Top 10.

I do know that CBS and Paramount are in it for the long haul, so we just try to keep our heads down and write as good of material as possible. And this cast, they’re fantastic, they really are. I think we have something special here, and I hope everybody comes on board.

Origins is now faced with the challenging task of standing out in a long-running franchise that's already filled with many fan-favorite spin-offs, such as NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawai'i. However, since NCIS has been on the air since 2003, Origins serving as a prequel to one of its most beloved characters gives the series a unique advantage. Always finding itself in Paramount+'s Top 10, it is clear that the showrunners and the cast's dedication to giving quality stories and performances has clearly resonated with audiences. While a second season is not guaranteed, the show's consistent placement in the streaming platform's rankings is a promising sign for renewal.

If renewed, NCIS: Origins season 2 could offer the opportunity to delve even deeper into the early cases that shaped the NIS, and the real-life events that contributed to its fallout, otherwise known as the Tailhook scandal, which consequently birthed NCIS in 1993. Additionally, a renewal would cement the show's place within the NCIS franchise, giving fans more time to connect with beloved characters while providing opportunities to tell new, real-life-based stories. If CBS and Paramount+ are truly "in it for the long haul," then fans of the show can expect to see more thrilling episodes in the years to come.

It is always intriguing to see a fresh take on a beloved franchise, and NCIS: Origins has proven that it has the potential to stand alongside its predecessors and its competition. By exploring the beginnings of Gibb's life in law enforcement while introducing new stories and characters, the show has been able to revitalize the NCIS universe. The showrunner's optimism, combined with the strong viewership metrics, suggest that NCIS: Origins has a bright future ahead. Fans of the show should keep their fingers crossed for a season 2 announcement while they continue to stream the new episodes.
