The ever-popular procedural series NCIS is a bona fide TV institution, and it is now slated to return for its 22nd season. Debuting back in 2003 as a spinoff of JAGNCIS follows the agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service who investigate criminal cases surrounding the U.S. military. Originally led by Mark Harmon as Agent Leroy Gibbs, the show has managed to pivot since Harmon's departure and maintain its status as one of the most-watched procedurals.

During the show's sixth season, the first of several NCIS spinoffs debuted, and NCIS: Los Angeles went on to have its own impressive 14-season run. In the years since other spinoffs have debuted to varying degrees of success, and the franchise continues to expand with recent additions like NCIS: Sydney and Hawaii. The NCIS universe is taking its first step in a new direction with the recently-announced NCIS: Origins which will explore the early days of Agent Gibbs. With so much hype still surrounding the franchise, NCIS season 22 seemed like a foregone conclusion, and the series was quickly renewed.

The cast of NCIS has changed a lot over the decades, but season 22's ensemble is expected to look a lot like season 21's. The only change hanging over the upcoming season premiere is the potential departure of Katrina Law's Agent Jessica Knight, and she may be forced to depart the team after being offered a new job elsewhere. However, Knight's departure isn't confirmed yet, and she could return in the early episodes of season 22. It's expected that Gary Cole will return as Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker alongside his second in command, Timothy Mcgee, played by Sean Murray.

Season 21 of NCIS started with the explosive story of Agent Torres going rogue, but that storyline was wrapped up before the season concluded. However, the ending of season 21 wasn't left without a cliffhanger, and the makeup of the team could change dramatically with the departure of Agent Knight. Toward the end of season 21, Knight was offered the position as REACT's Chief Training Officer at Camp Pendelton, and she seriously considered taking the job. Her departure wasn't clarified in season 21, meaning NCIS season 22 will have to reveal Knight's ultimate decision.

Beyond Knight's personal storyline, the latest trailer also revealed that season 22 may have an overarching narrative. The trailer reveals that a mole has infiltrated NCIS, and it's up to Parker and his team to find the infiltrator before things get dangerous. In typical NCIS fashion, things will escalate, and the team will have to get their hands dirty to find out who has sold out NCIS.

In anticipation of the show's return in October, CBS dropped a full trailer for NCIS season 22 in September. The minute-and-a-half tease reveals a new storyline going into season 22 involving a mole within the NCIS organization. Agent Parker is tasked with keeping things under wraps while also helping his team to expose the insider before anything dangerous happens. However, the storyline won't be without violence as the trailer reveals a dead body in Vance's office, though it doesn't show who it is.
