Chicago P.D. star Marina Squerciati has a lot to celebrate in the New Year. Squerciati, who’s played Officer Kim Burgess on Chicago P.D. since Season 1, announced that she was pregnant and expecting her second child with her husband, Eli Kay-Oliphant, in an Instagram post on New Year’s Eve 2024.
“2024 was a BIG year for me, literally. I thought I handled being a pregnant working mom with grace—swipe to see my daughter’s very different take,” Squerciati captioned an Instagram with two photos: one of her with a baby bump while in a bikini in Miami and another of a drawing that her daughter made of their family. The drawing showed three figures: a little girl and a dad with smiles on their faces and a mom with a crazed expression.

In the caption, Squerciati also explained that her pregnancy was the reason she wasn’t in the first two episodes of Chicago P.D. Season 12. In Chicago P.D. Season 12’s premiere, Burgess’ fiance, Officer Adam Ruzek, explained that she wasn’t at the 21st District because she was at a conference for NAWLEE (National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives).
While Squerciati didn’t reveal when she was due in her Instagram post, it’s very possible that she’s already given birth to her second child given that Burgess returned to Chicago P.D. in Season 12, Episode 3. Following the news of her pregnancy, many of Squerciati’s Chicago P.D. cast mates took to her comments to congratulate her on the announcement. “the best to doit love you Burgess✨,” wrote LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Officer Kevin Atwater. Tracy Spirdakos, who played Detective Hailey Upton from Seasons 4 to 11, commented three heart emojis.
Squerciati and Kay-Oliphant, an attorney, welcomed their first child, a daughter, in May 2017. Squerciati announced her pregnancy three months prior in February. At the time of her daughter’s birth, Squerciati temporarily left Chicago P.D. to go on maternity leave.

“I have three adjectives in my head whenever I’m parenting, [but] it’s not like I wake up and am like ‘This is my mantra for the day.'” Squerciati told Chicago Parent in 2018 about what it was like to be a first-time mom. “I want her to be brave, I want her to be confident and I want her to be kind. … I don’t dress her in pink and frills and stuff like that, but I also want to respect that if that’s what she wants as a woman, she’s allowed to choose that. If she doesn’t want to be a badass, that’s fine too. I just want her to choose and be confident in her choices. … I want her to be safe, but I also want her to be brave, and I don’t want to sort of swoop her up in every single instance. … Inside I’m pretty uptight, but I really am trying to parent in a more low-key manner.”
Chicago P.D. is available to stream on Peacock.
