Fire Country Season 3, Episode 8 “Promise Me” ended on a literal fiery cliffhanger, with the fate of three different characters—and possibly even four—hanging in the balance. Bode (Max Thieriot) and Audrey (Leven Rambin) are in a pool trying to ride out a fire they ended up in the middle of because Bode is incapable of following orders and walking away when he needs to.
Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila), meanwhile, got into a fight with Jake (Jordan Calloway) after he called her out on continuing her reckless behavior while on the job. Instead of taking that to heart, her response was to walk out on Jake, take her firefighter gear off, and storm off — without even thinking about where she was going. Yes, while a deadly fire is raging.
Meanwhile, a fourth person who wasn’t even in danger, to begin with, Manny (Kevin Alejandro), heard his daughter, Gabriela, was in danger near the end of the episode and decided he had to put himself in the line of fire and go look for her. (Because, of course, it wasn’t enough for us to worry about three characters, now we have to worry about four.) And the promo for the next episode, which won’t air until 2025, promises Manny will indeed go looking for Gabriela.
Fire Country returns with new episodes on Friday, January 3, so that means we have about a month and a half to ponder the cliffhanger and wonder how likely each character is to make it out of their respective situations. And all of them have it tough. Bode and Audrey are at least together and they have the benefit of being in water, but they presumably won’t be getting help anytime soon because the last Sharon (Diane Farr) heard from Bode and Audrey, they were on their way out of the fire. So her priority is Gabriela, who she knows is somewhere dangerous. The same goes for Jake, and obviously, Manny.
Of course, Gabriela is indeed in more immediate danger. She’s got nowhere to go, no cover and she’ll be surrounded by fire soon. And though Manny will likely get to her soon, that might only add company to her misery. So it’s a good thing that everyone has their sights on Gabriela.
We know Bode can swim, while Audrey can’t. If they have to hold in the middle of the pool, or even underwater, for a long time, then that might be something only Bode can survive. That is, unless someone else realizes Bode needs help too. Vince (Billy Burke), maybe? He and Eve have been dealing with her family issues, but that doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere. (Or at the very least those issues are going to have to take a backseat to four near-death experiences.) If there’s someone who might check on his son in the middle of an active fire scene, it’s Vince.
Either way, for now, the show goes on a hiatus with two main characters in grave danger, one main character in soon-to-be in grave danger, and one recurring character also in danger. We’re not saying anyone’s going to die for sure, but if we had to hedge our bets, smart money’s on Audrey. And if that does end up being what happens, that’s going to be the kind of thing Bode might never recover from.
Fire Country is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
