What Blue Bloods Season 14’s Two New Characters Mean For Its Finale

Blue Bloods is adding two new characters for season 14 that will have meaning for the series finale. The Tom Selleck-led drama about a multigenerational family of cops continues to be popular, despite CBS' decision to cancel Blue Bloods after season 14. While a fan-led movement to save the series failed to reverse the cancelation decision, the series has promised a satisfying wrap-up involving every member of Blue Bloods' Reagan family.

Blue Bloods has only a few episodes left in season 14 before it wraps up for good, yet the series has promised to add two new characters in the lead-up to the finale, played by well-known actresses Mira Sorvino and Debi Mazar. These characters will help usher in the final stage of the Reagans' story, ultimately leading to a more satisfying ending, despite it seeming strange to add more people so close to when the series leaves the airwaves for good.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Introduces Two New Characters Ahead Of Its Finale

A Fire Commissioner And New District Attorney Are Slated To Appear

Two well-known actresses will join Blue Bloods for its final episode. Mira Sorvino will play the fire commissioner, Veronica Radley, while Debi Mazar will take the role of a new district attorney, Evaline Romano. These characters will interact with Frank and Erin, undoubtedly leading to a lot of drama before the series ends. Mazar is slated to appear in the series' first new episode on October 18, while Sorvino will guest star in November 1's episode (via TV Insider).

While Mazar is only expected to appear in one episode, Sorvino will appear in two, suggesting that Radley has a bigger story. Had Blue Bloods continued past season 14, it's likely she would have become a recurring character similar to Mayor Chase (Dylan Walsh), who appears in a limited number of episodes but is almost always a thorn in Frank's side.

Sorvino's character has an interesting role to play. As the Fire Commissioner, Valerie Radley is analogous to Frank, and may have similar issues with Mayor Chase. During her first appearance, she will ask Frank to intervene in a conflict between her and Chase, which will likely be difficult for Frank, considering that he and Chase never get along. Additionally, some of the best Blue Bloods episodes refer to the rivalry between the fire and police departments, so this request might make things twice as awkward — but romantic sparks could fly for Radley and Frank as the series wraps up.

Conversely, Mazar's Evaline Romano will only appear on Blue Bloods once. However, Romano's determination to prove Erin engaged in misconduct could lead to a career change for Erin or a reconsideration of Erin's previous decision not to run for Manhattan District Attorney herself. Erin will undoubtedly resent the district attorney's accusations, especially considering that Erin has put her career at risk to preserve her integrity before. This conflict could therefore play into the resolution of Erin's story as the series heads toward its final episode.
